Middlesex University Dubai Hosts Love of the Planet 2026: A Celebration of Sustainability and Innovation

Introduction: A Campus-Wide Commitment to Sustainability

On 16 February 2026, Middlesex University Dubai transformed its campus into a vibrant hub of sustainability, innovation, and community action during the fourth annual For the Love of the Planet (FTLOTP) event. Organised by the Institute of Sustainable Development, this year’s edition brought together students, staff, and partners for a day dedicated to addressing real-world environmental challenges through creative solutions and collaborative engagement. The event highlighted the university’s growing commitment to sustainability and its role in fostering future leaders who are equipped to tackle global issues.

Inspiring Voices and Strategic Partnerships

This year’s FTLOTP event featured Dubai Cares as the keynote partner and organising partner for the Sustainability Innovation Challenge. The event also welcomed three distinguished guest speakers who shared powerful insights on sustainability, purpose, and community impact. Barbara Bedike from Dubai Cares, Inder Bhagnani from Feed a Labour, and Leonard Slabbert from Boehringer Ingelheim delivered inspiring talks that emphasised the importance of education, dignity, volunteering, and purpose-driven careers in building a more sustainable and equitable future. These partnerships demonstrate how academic institutions can collaborate with industry leaders and humanitarian organisations to create meaningful change.

Students Driving Sustainability Solutions

A key highlight of the day was the Sustainability Innovation Challenge, which saw more than 70 students across 14 teams develop ideas to address real-world sustainability issues. The winning team, consisting of Elizaveta Vasileva, Donovan Figg, Muhammad Shazain, and Surya Ramakrishnan, impressed the judging panel with their innovative and practical sustainability concept. Their proposal demonstrated how student-led ideas can contribute meaningfully to addressing global sustainability challenges. The top three teams will now have the opportunity to visit Dubai Cares, where they will refine their concepts and develop them into professional pitches for the organisation’s Ramadan Fundraising and Corporate Engagement Challenge. This initiative supports the Adopt a Community Kitchen programme in Kenya, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with an international humanitarian organisation and contribute ideas that could support real-world community impact.

Campus-Wide Engagement and Interactive Activities

Beyond the competition, the event featured a vibrant programme of interactive activities and sustainability showcases organised in collaboration with student societies. Activities included a fashion styling competition highlighting sustainable fashion and creative reuse, the Mannequin Challenge bringing students together in a fun and visually striking sustainability moment, upcycled tote-bag painting promoting creativity while encouraging the reuse of materials, virtual reality experiences exploring sustainability themes and immersive learning, a Plant Adoption Drive inviting students and staff to take home plants and promote greener living, and sustainability showcases presenting innovative student ideas and initiatives. The event also resulted in an unprecedented volume of clothing being collected, upcycled, and diverted from landfill, reflecting the strong engagement of the Middlesex University Dubai community and its growing commitment to responsible consumption and sustainable practices.

A Collaborative Community Effort

The success of FTLOTP 2026 reflected strong collaboration across multiple teams at Middlesex University Dubai. The Careers and Employability Services team facilitated the participation of external speakers and partners, while the fashion showcase and sustainability activities were led by Andrea Sequeira, Lecturer in Fashion, and Vaishali Raj, Senior Lecturer in Fashion. Student engagement was central to the event, with leadership from Rhoderick Romano, Senior Lecturer and the Green Wave Society, alongside the Biodiversity and Wildlife Conservation Community, Mariam Aslam, Senior Lecturer in Finance, and Muhammed Rizwan, who coordinated MBA student participation. Event engagement and logistics were supported by Lynda Hyland, Associate Professor of Psychology, and Rory McConnon, Senior Lecturer in Management, with management support from Dr Tenia Kyriazi and Professor Cedwyn Fernandes. This collaborative approach demonstrates how sustainability initiatives can bring together diverse stakeholders to create meaningful impact.

Looking Forward: Sustainability as a Core Value

For the Love of the Planet 2026 highlighted the collaborative spirit of the Middlesex University Dubai community and its shared commitment to sustainability. The event showcased how academic institutions can serve as catalysts for change by providing platforms for students to develop innovative solutions to global challenges. As universities continue to play a crucial role in addressing sustainability issues, events like FTLOTP demonstrate the power of combining education, innovation, and community action to create a more sustainable future.
