Middlesex University Dubai Highlights Student Mental Health Support for World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day: A Campus‑Wide Focus

On 10 October 2025, Middlesex University Dubai marked the global observance of World Mental Health Day with a series of campus‑wide activities designed to promote awareness, destigmatise talk and provide practical resources for students and staff alike. The event is part of the university’s long‑standing commitment to treating mental wellbeing on par with physical health, recognising that both are critical to a thriving academic community.

CAS‑Led Panel Discussion

The Centre for Academic Success (CAS) hosted a panel featuring Joy Abi Habib, Dr Shaju George, João Lourenço, and student Melissa Josephine Simmons, moderated by Rubina Zahoor. The discussion covered:

  • Breaking stigma and normalising mental health conversations.
  • Building resilience amid academic pressure.
  • Creating psychologically safe spaces within campus life.

Panelists shared personal stories and evidence‑based strategies, underscoring the university’s emphasis on a culture of empathy and proactive support.

Campus Talks: Mind Matters (The Myriad)

The second edition of Campus Talks took place on the same day at The Myriad in partnership with TECOM and Dubai International Academic City. With a focus on emotional balance, resilience and peer support, the session encouraged students to share coping mechanisms and foster community dialogue. By inviting diverse voices—including the experienced Dr Adenike ‘Omo’ D. and the empowering student activist Amgad Mabrok—the university strengthened its network of peer‑led mentorship.

Extending Outreach: Engaging Local Schools

CAS expanded the conversation beyond the university by hosting mental‑health workshops in the region’s schools:

  • Raffles International School – “Strong Minds, Bright Futures” led by Mitzi Amaral provided students with research‑backed resilience techniques for university transition.
  • GEMS New Millennium School – 13–15 October series of “Stress Busters” introduced concepts such as eustress and taught mindfulness, gratitude, movement breaks, and sleep hygiene.

These sessions highlighted the importance of early intervention and community support for mental health, offering youngsters practical tools for managing academic and social demands.

Ongoing Mental Health Support

While the 10 October day shines a spotlight, mental‑health resources at Middlesex University Dubai operate year‑round. Students can book confidential counselling, participate in wellbeing workshops, or join peer‑support groups through CAS. The support framework extends to students of determination, ensuring an inclusive experience for all.

How Students Can Take Action

1. Book Counselling – Simple online appointments via the CAS portal.

2. Attend Workshops – Look for scheduled activities in the student calendar.

3. Engage with Peers – Join discussion groups or mental‑health clubs to share experiences.
